Supreet Deshpande is a third generation musician in the illustrious family of noted musicologist Late Pt. S.B. Deshpande. Initiated into world of Tabla at a young age of three, Supreet has since learnt for over 20 years from his father; Tabla virtuoso Pt. Kiran Deshpande – the foremost disciple and worthy successor of the Delhi – Farrukhabad gharanas’ legendary Ustad Shaikh Dawood Khan sahib. He has also learned the intricacies of the Taal – kriya from the illustrious Sangeet Vidwan Taalyogi Pt. Suresh Talwalkar, whose contribution in furthering the repertoire of Tabla is unparalleled in modern times.
As an artist of rare caliber, Supreet’s identity is rooted in clarity of ‘Bols’ (syllables), soothing balance of sound (naad) technique and crisp rendering of even the most complicated compositions of Tabla. Supreet’s wide repertoire includes compositions from various gharanas (schools) of Tabla namely – Delhi, Ajrada, Lucknow, Benaras, Punjab and Farrukhabad. Grounded in good ‘Taaleem’ (learning), rigorous ‘Riyaz’ (practice) and strong conviction for the freedom of expression; Supreet has been able to bring in shades of the great maestros into his art while retaining his own distinct identity. Supreet consciously includes rare traditional bandishes (compositions) in his recitals as his contribution towards their preservation in original forms.
After listening to his solo concert in the prestigious Tansen Samaroh, the renowned music critic Shri Mohan Nadkarni wrote in The Times of India –
“Supreet is one of those rare child prodigies who have done justice to his talent through sheer dint of his commitment. No doubt, the future of Tabla is in safe hands.”
Doing justice to the trust showed by such connoisseurs, Supreet is today acknowledged as one of the most accomplished Tabla soloists of his generation.
In a public performance career of over three decades, Supreet has performed in almost all major festivals in India including Tansen Samaroh – Gwalior, Shankarlal festival – New Delhi, Ustad Amir Khan festival – Indore, Ustad Allauddin Khan Festival – Maihar, Harvallabh Sangeet Sammelan – Jalandhar, Bharat Bhawan – Bhopal, Surya festival – Trivendrum etc. Recently, his Tabla solo in Baaja Gaaja festival 2011 where he performed on the special invitation of Smt. Shubha Mudgal, received critical acclaim for his creative ‘Peshkaar’, ‘Qaidas’ and ‘Relas’ for reminding connoisseurs of the maestros of yore.
Over the years, Supreet has performed and taken workshops in several countries, some of which are USA, Germany, France, Japan, Switzerland, UK, Hungary, Spain, Bulgaria, Slovenia, Romania, UAE, Japan etc. As an empaneled artist of Indian Council for Cultural Relations, Supreet is regularly invited to participate in Government of India’s cultural delegations to spread Indian classical music.
